Turtle Tree
Catching turtles was one of our favorite endeavors – particularly very large or very small ones. The Lake has thee different species – red eared sliders, xxx, and what we called leather backs. The leather backs were fewer in numbers, harder to catch because they could swim faster, and dangerous. The other two species could be handled safely but a leather back has a neck long enough that he can reach around and bite you, no matter how you pick him up.
Any place in the sun is a good place to look for red eared sliders sunning themselves, but the turtle tree was special because even when they saw us coming and hit the water, the water around the tree was shallow enough that we could track them down on foot before they got away.
