Epitaph Of A One-Party State
“…in loving memory of a California that once was”

, because it is not possible to be objective without understanding both sides of a debate. That means I occasionally attend Republican events to express my support for sanity, but the Democrat events are becoming harder for me. I was tempted recently to attend one of the nationwide “Kings” rallies, but I thought better of it after watching them on TV, dancing in the street with signs and screaming F-bombs in every sentence. Events like that are dangerous for me because, were I to be recognized as someone not subscribing blindly to their cause, I would be at risk of physical assault.

To wit, today I inquired about attending the Santa Cruz Republicans’ Annual BBQ Fundraiser, only to learn that the venue is being divulged only to attendees after they purchase tickets. This is a result of left-wing-nuts harassing and assaulting guests at one of their earlier events. Restaurant owner, Chielo Apac, originally of Pacific Island heritage, where people behave in civilized fashion, and a resident of northern California farming country, where free speech and the rule of law prevail, made the mistake of allowing “those evil Republicans” to hold an event in her restaurant earlier this year. The following Facebook reactions resulted in a blanket boycott that put one of our favorite restaurants out of business.

Mrs. Apac’s experience once again reminds me of Elenor Rosavelt’s wise words of decades ago, and repeated by others like Rush Limbaugh –  “Republicans see Democrats and good people with bad ideas, and Democrats see Republicans and bad people”.

For clear-eyed, well-intentioned people to try to keep their meeting places secret to avoid violence does not solve the problem – it only encourages more uncivilized behavior. It appears that communism has found a comfortable home in California.
