Nonintrusive Party Test

Prof. Irwin Corey, the World’s Foremost Authority, died recently at the age of 102. I was, of course, immediately reminded of his hilarious TV personality, but it also occurred to me that his way with words could serve another purpose.

When we occasionally meet someone new, we often want to test their political leanings first, and proceed cautiously. Sometimes, just the idea of discussing the subject openly with family and friends can be discomforting. The following is a subtle ice-breaker that you can send to them. This foolproof method gets an honest answer without prying into private space.

The following four responses are the most common ones. [i]Feel free to change the names of the dignitaries to match election cycles.

  1. If your unsuspecting new friend has an irritated reaction to how the Professor changes subjects multiple times in the same sentence, you have found a Trump hater.
  2. If the response is about a poetic word-salad, in a pleasing cadence, totally absent of any meaning, this is a Kamala critique.
  3. A comment about elder abuse, vascular dementia, etc. indicates a Biden reference, so proceed cautiously.
  4. Click the icon if your new acquaintance laughs without a connection to any of the above; you have found someone worth getting to know.
